Police continued search for Jaymar Sims 24 after he was shot in the leg in Beckley. Lt. Dave Cook said suspect is Scruggs, 6 feet 1, 180 pounds with red hair, last seen near Washington and Broadway. Contact Beckley Police or Crime Stoppers with tips.
Glen Jean man Byron Shelton pleaded a Kennedy plea to third degree sexual abuse in the case involving a 12 year old girl in January. The indictment cited third degree sexual assault as felonious, potential prison term up to five years, while the Kennedy plea carries up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Assistant prosecutor Teresa Daniel said the plea shields the victim and mother from trial trauma, noting the victim is now 13 and her mother recently underwent brain surgery. Oak Hill Police Officer Thomas Mason testified about the incident, describing the events at the victim’s home and Shelton’s involvement. Judge John Hatcher Jr. accepted the plea and ordered Shelton to register as a sex offender and undergo evaluations. Shelton remains free on bond.
Summers Circuit Judge Robert Irons denied a defense motion to release Christopher Wayne Palmer, 20, on bond until his July 27 sentencing for conspiracy to deliver and delivery of marijuana. Palmer, from Nimitz, pleaded guilty June 12 to the 1996 charges amid a 1997 Summers County drug sting. He faces additional counts and a domestic battery case. bond issues and magistrate court procedures were discussed as part of his ongoing plea negotiations.
