Beckley native Monte Blaney has been named assistant manager at Bell Atlantic's Washington DC customer repair service center. He will speed training for residence call receipt centers in DC and Baltimore. Blaney, 26 years in telecommunications, previously worked in Odenton MD and led training and labor initiatives.

The State Fair of West Virginia awarded multiple scholarships to southern West Virginia students from four funds. Carolyn Evans of Ronceverte won a $1,100 Equine Scholarship funded by the Equine Scholarship and Promotional Fund with several donors named. The Junior Show Scholarship totaled $1,300 and went to seven recipients from four 4-H and FFA clubs. Other scholarships included $1,000 Youth Exhibit Scholarships to Kathy Broyles and Laura Iller, and a $700 Junior Dairy Scholarship to Aaron Helmick, funded by dairy exhibit proceeds.
