Pocahontas County Votes on Fate of Defunct Tannery
Voters on May 12 will decide whether Pocahontas County can sell the 233 acre Howes Leather Tannery site now East Fork Industrial Park to private interests. The sale was halted after a 1997 auction to an investment group led by Joe Manchin and Larry Puccio was annulled by a referendum petition. If the referendum passes, a new auction will be held and the county must address ongoing environmental cleanup and job losses from Howes closure.
