Stocks soar as Dow crosses 9000 on Citicorp Travelers merger

New York stocks closed above 9000 for the first time on news that Citicorp and Travelers Group agreed to merge in a 70 billion dollar deal. The Dow rose 49.82 to 9033.23 as Travelers finished up 10 points, Citicorp up 37, Merrill Lynch higher as trading volume reached 603 million.
