August food prices surge at 40 year high
August grocery costs rose 7.4 percent for food from the end of the freeze on beef. Overall consumer prices climbed 1.8 percent, the fastest monthly rise since 1947, with meats and eggs driving the bulk of the food spike. A separate Los Angeles report showed a 4.3 percent food price rise in August, lifting metro CPI 1.4 percent to the year.
