Contemporary scholars have produced four of the best Bible translations in English for about one billion readers. The RSV, Jerusalem Bible, New English Bible, and Today’s English Version are praised for readability and precision, with Catholic and Protestant scholars converging on accuracy.
In the First Presbyterian church annex on Sunday at a.m. Dr. Mark L. Andrews will preach on Do We Need Simplification with a focus on the perceived complexity of religious thought and programs. Miss Carl Gaston will assist as liturgist, Rebecca Hathaway guest organist, and Mrs. David Barnes soprano.
A Special Bishop's Emergency Appeal seeks funds to rehabilitate United Methodist church properties and aid pastors and families affected by Hurricane Camille. Dennis Fletcher of the Methodist Board of Missions reported after surveying the storm area that 24 churches were damaged or destroyed, 11 parsonages damaged, with grave personal losses for pastors. Much destruction is not insurable as water damage is often excluded from policies.
Nine churches including Mentone and Yucaipa join Ecumenical Education Task Force to offer a thirteen week Bible telecourse on The New Testament and Modern Man starting the week of September 14. Dr Edward W Bauman presents half hour lectures with discussion periods. Enrollment includes a study guide and An Introduction to the New Testament. Additional family enrollments possible after initial fee. Courses run mornings afternoons and evenings Sunday through Wednesday across ten sessions per week over four days each week. Participation open to community non sectarian study of New Testament relevance for modern life. Participating churches are First Baptist First Congregational First Evangelical Lutheran First Methodist First Presbyterian Mentone Congregational Sacred Heart State Street Christian Trinity Episcopal and Yucaipa Methodist.
Madalyn Murray O’Hair, an atheist, files suit to halt religious displays tied to NASA launches. She claims Apollo missions and Armstrong family prominence are used to promote Christianity, prompting questions about government endorsement of religion in space. The case proceeds in the Fifth Circuit with Judge Homer Thornberry among the panel members.
The Yucaipa Valley Presbyterian Church resumes its regular Sunday schedule with services at 9 and 11 a.m. Rev. Wendell G. Wollam will preach on “Deep and Wide.” The church school begins its fall program at 9:50 a.m. with classes for preschool through adults following the family service. A dedication service for pupils, teachers, and congregation is planned for September.
Sacramento UPI reports UC agricultural scientist James B Kendrick Jr predicts dinner menus could shift toward protein rich wheat rice flour and ersatz meats with less real meat poultry and eggs as a way to cope with scarce protein. He says plant produced protein could be cheaper and notes advances in new crop varieties.
Rev Thomas Holt opens a new church in Calimesa with first services scheduled tomorrow at 9 00 and 11 16 am. The Reformed Presbyterian church Evangelical Synod holds 11 am and 7 pm services at 504 Myrtlewood drive. Holt, a Gordon College and Reformed Episcopal Seminary graduate, previously served as supply pastor at Duntroon.
The Yucaipa church hosts Sunday promotions at 9:50 AM led by Mrs. Eaton Mrs. Roberts and Miss deVries. Prospective members gather in the Calamellia room at 3 PM for inquiries. A songfest directed by Mr. Wililing and Mrs. Wiling with Charles Gold on piano runs 7 PM in the sanctuary. The junior UMYF features music and scripture. Shunin Takachiho from Japan will ukulele and sing. Teachers and younger adults meet Thursday at 10 AM in the education office.
First Baptist Church plans a shift to a single 11 am service after a summer with First Methodist. Rev. David Silke will preach at 12 am on the new Christian Faith and Work Plan. An early Sunday prayer and Communion service is set for Sept 14 led by Dr. Ivan Bell. Fourth graders will receive Bibles and new teaching materials will be used.

Yucaipa School District to run Head Start preschool during the 1969-70 year with about 20 to 25 students in a Dunlop School kindergarten room. Program runs four hours daily five days a week, funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity via San Francisco regional Head Start office. No board action required. Also approved Guadalupe Boys' Home remedial and cultural enrichment program for 34 residents.
Southland consumer activity remained strong in August as the Southern California index reached 203.3, up from 202.2 in July. department store sales rose 7.5 percent, while real estate and construction showed declines, and bank debits edged higher. Employment rose sharply with July unemployment unchanged, marking a substantial year over year gain in payrolls.
Mrs Darrell Terry of La Mirada will speak for the Christian Women's Fellowship at Westside Church of Christ Olive Avenue Tuesday evening at 7 30. The event includes music by residents from Ripplingdale and notes on her Lincoln Christian College background and campaign for education clinics.
