As Hurricane Anita skirts toward the Texas coast, 8,000 people evacuate South Padre Island and nearby areas while others board up and wait. Forecasters warn tides up to five feet above normal and winds near 115 mph may push the storm ashore south of Brownsville.

Ford to attend Canal treaty signing at White House

US Cuba open direct talks ends long embargo stalemate

The United States and Cuba opened 10 person interests sections in Havana and Washington the first direct communications in nearly 17 years. Undersecretary Philip Habib called it a beginning not an end as Todman outlined three US preconditions for full diplomatic relations. The Cuban side cited the blockade as a barrier and said its removal is needed before full ties can resume.

Ethel Waters famed stage and screen star dies at age 80, reportedly of heart failure, after more than six decades in show business. A religious woman who debuted on Broadway in Plantation Revenue of 1924 and popularized Dinah, she remained active on television into her 70s despite diabetes and heart trouble.

Wholesale prices rise 0.1 percent in August amid cooling inflation

UPI reports the Labor Department data show wholesale prices up 0.1 percent in August the fourth straight month of farm price declines. Farm prices fell 4.3 percent with processed foods down 0.8 percent. Inflation cooled since spring, but officials predict higher annual rates this year despite moderating monthly gains. Tariffs and energy costs influenced industrial prices, while crude oil and gas prices rose.

Smith lands sweeping Rhodesian election mandate in 1st line

In Salisbury Ian Smith won a near clean sweep in the Rhodesian parliamentary election, securing 49 of 50 white seats and a two thirds majority to push constitutional changes. He agreed to studying an Anglo American peace plan from U N Ambassador Young and British Foreign Secretary Owen while pursuing an internal settlement excluding the Patriotic Front.

Plane crashes kill six in Riverside and Los Angeles forests

Six people died in two separate nighttime crashes in California. In Riverside County the single engine Piper Cherokee crashed near Eagle Canyon, burning and killing four people whose identities were not released. In Los Angeles County a Bellanca Viking crashed near Johnstone Peak, killing two men identified as Arcadia residents Larry Clayton, 41, and William Parsons, 40. Officials linked the first crash to a Phoenix to Corona flight. the second was Las Vegas to El Monte.
