Unemployment fell from 4.8 to 4.5 percent, lowest in over 30 years, with October jobless at 4.1 million and employment rising 3.2 million over the past year. White collar and service workers led a broad gain while adult men accounted for more than half of the improvement.
United Press International reports Egypt reimposed wartime blackout and pressed Arab allies while Egyptian editor Heikal warned that war renewal is likelier than peace. In Tel Aviv Gen Bar-Lev doubted Egypt’s chance to renew action. Meir urged cease fire talks and POW exchanges, not unilateral troop shifts, amid ongoing tensions across Cairo Beirut and Riyadh with Syria’s Assad.
United States implements mandatory heating oil allocations amid record cold from the Rocky Mountains to the Northwest. Western Europe and Canada respond with cuts and export tax moves. California agriculture warns of diesel shortages halting rice and corn harvests. Washington bus services and airline flights face disruption as Arab oil cuts deepen the energy crisis.
Washington reports that consumer buying of clothing and textile goods is about 10 percent above 1972 levels, while cotton supply tightness could cut U.S. mill consumption. The Agriculture Department projects July 1 starts to nudge annual cotton use down to roughly 7.4 million bales, about 5 percent below last season.

White House aide Stephen Bull testified that President Nixon told him on Sept 29 at Camp David two or three more tapes may be missing. Bull said Alexander Haig directed him to bring tapes to Camp David for review as part of a Senate Watergate inquiry. The hearing also heard that tapes of June 20, 1972 with John Mitchell and April 15, 1973 with John Dean III were among those later found not to exist due to tape gaps or technical issues.
President Nixon flew to Florida for a weekend at his vacation home, leaving aides behind. Bryce N. Harlow accompanied him, while Chief of Staff Alexander Haig Jr. and Press Secretary Ronald Ziegler took a later flight. Mrs. Nixon stayed in Washington as the White House media note reached reporters after departure. The trip underscored Nixon's tension over the Watergate crisis and his ire at press coverage.
Senate leaders clashed over how to handle William Saxbe’s nomination as attorney general. Senator Mansfield resisted delaying ongoing Watergate probe work or offering a courtesy confirmation, while Senator Scott pressed to move Saxbe’s hearings ahead. White House announced it will present a memorandum dictated by Nixon recounting his April 15, 1973 meeting with former White House counsel John W. Dean III. The move comes as Cox had argued tapes or memorandums related to Dean and a June 20, 1972 Mitchell conversation may be subpoenaed. Jaworski said he will focus on the tapes first as successor to Cox.
