A 10 day oil workers strike involving 90 000 workers threatens California supply as government limits aviation gasoline deliveries. Pittsburgh California plant closure noted as unions reject 18 1/2 cent wage raise. About 25 percent of US crude refining capacity halted by the walkout.
Admiral Arthur W. Radford commander of the US Pacific fleet visits the Tsoying Naval Base in Formosa to assess the Nationalist navy and marines in one of his final actions before leaving. He later attends a Taipei dinner in honor and heads to Manila the next day.
May 9, 1952 forecast calls for mostly clear conditions tonight and Saturday in southern California with minor high and early morning low coastal clouds. Temperatures little changed. highs near 78, lows around 45. A light fog may touch morning air with a 48-degree cool spell assisting a home fire.
In Tokyo a half hour riot on the Waseda University campus left 54 students injured after 50 club swinging police clashed with about 100 students protesting two policemen seeking student addresses from May Day riot events. Police reinforcements arrived and dispersed the crowd with clubs, rescuing officers.
In a New Year air clash near the Manchurian border American Sabre jets repelled a Communist MIG-15 using a Shooting Star in a first time cripple in recent months. Allied air power claimed a favorable eight to one kill ratio despite Reds holding numerical edge, while ground fighting around Yonchon saw Communist forces push Allied troops from a hill three times before artillery drove them off.
Stephen Carlton Johnson five drowned at Lester Mill er ranch pool after slipping and falling unconscious yesterday. Father Elmer Johnson of Berkeley found him and reported the incident.
A three man naval court of inquiry in Bayonne New Jersey began hearings into the April 26 collision between the aircraft carrier Wasp and the destroyer mine sweeper Hobson that sank in the Atlantic with 176 men missing. Captain Burnham C McCaffree named an interested party. The court planned to hear depositions from 61 Hobson survivors as the Wasp undergoes repairs in drydock.
Hollywood gossip reports Rita Hayworth will postpone finalizing her divorce from Prance Aly Khan until her new film production is complete. She returned from Europe last fall after a two year absence and cited preproduction duties as the reason for delaying the Reno divorce.
Grace Walt files in Superior Court alleging injuries from a fall through a church floor at the First Methodist church. She says the incident occurred while she was mailing circulars to raise funds for a church modernization program.
YOKOHAMA AP Army promised severe disciplinary action against an American soldier who lassoed a Japanese bicyclist from a truck and dragged him. Five enlisted men were arrested though identities withheld pending investigation. The victim, Yutaka Tomono, 30, was hospitalized. Brig. Gen. Devine ordered relentless pursuit of the guilty.
GALESBURG, filishR-Knox College students held a mock GOP nominating convention and backed Gov. Earl Warren of California on the fifth ballot after four ballots left the race deadlocked. Warren won 219 of 287 votes as Taft supporters mostly deserted to Warren. Eisenhower drew three votes, with Stassen and McCormick also listed.

Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway, back from Korea, readies to relinquish command in the Far East and depart for a Europe posting, as Gen. Mark W. Clark is set to assume leadership. A transfer ceremony was canceled and Ridgway may stay in command until departure. a joint press conference with Clark is planned. He leaves Tokyo Monday for the United States then Paris to replace Eisenhower as NATO supreme commander. The 30 hour Korea tour ended with a visit to President Rhee at Pusan. Ridgway declined to comment on Brig. Gen. Francis T. Dodd’s prison camp capture by 5,000 Communist prisoners.
Boston led with a sequence of runs totaling 49 while New York managed 79. Wight pitched seven innings for Boston with Brickner and White catching. For New York Sain and Hogue combined with Berta in the late relief effort to seal the win.
Paris reports six European nations including France Belgium the Netherlands Luxembourg West Germany and Italy will initial a European army draft treaty at 6 p.m. to form a 1 250 000 man western defense force to deter Russia. The plan aims to defend the West with Allied forces under North Atlantic pact command while France resists Germanys autonomous army. The force would total 43 divisions with governance by a ministerial council assembly and commissioners. Several issues remain before a May 20 signing including funding headquarters duration voting and parliamentary ratification amid opposition in Germany and France.
ESPANOLA N M UP The Rio Grande swelled after a rock and earth dam failed in Colorado and flood waters threatened the town. Police Chief Dan Julian said the river was at flood stage as 6 000 acre feet of water entered the stream. Levees rose three feet and sheltered about 1 500 residents. 35 to 40 families moved to higher ground in the schoolhouse area and others saved possessions as the river threatened to crest.
Robert D. Murphy, the U S ambassador to newly independent Japan, visited the imperial palace in Tokyo to present his credentials to Emperor Hirohito. Murphy was the sixth foreign representative to make a formal appearance before the emperor as normal diplomatic relations began.
Washington AP The Senate Judiciary Committee approved James P. McGranery's nomination as attorney general by a 8 to 4 vote. Republicans Ferguson Jenner Kendrickson Watkins joined a split panel with Wiley abstaining, while McCarran reserved time for a full Senate vote and allowed a minority report. McGranery faced questions on the steel seizure constitutional powers and the 1945 Amerasia case, refusing to discuss the seizure but saying the president should use statutory authority before invoking inherent powers.
TAIPEI UP Soviet Russia and Communist China signed a secret military agreement binding China to place all resources under Russian control. The treaty commits both nations to back North Korea to the very last with Russia supplying Peiping with money equipment and supplies.
In Compton a 17 year old Johnnie Hisel and his twin uncles Ray and Richard Tucker, both 18, entered a Navy office seeking enlistment if they could remain together as a unit. Lt. Cmdr. George F. P. Daly agreed, and the trio departed for Navy boot camp in San Diego.
DETROIT AP An Air Force Reserve officer Gordon Cook 28 said he paid $100 to dodge recall alleging family worry. He claimed bribery linked to altering medical records with Sgt Luther Bradley and others. Indicted along with Cook and Bradley were Joseph Crowley Edward Kanick and tavern owner Martin Haase who acted as Bradley's collection agent for bribes ranging from 15 to 150.
Gen James A Van Fleet said Reds demands from Brig Gen Francis T Dodd captors on Koje Island are unreasonable and will not be granted. He warned of force if needed to free Dodd as Communists quarrel over what his return would mean to the UN. Dodd, commander of the camp, was seized Wednesday by more than 6 000 prisoners.
Rep Paul W. Shafer urged the House Armed Services committee to launch a new inquiry into the Navy in Elk Hills California oil reserves. He sought to determine Clark Clifford's role in the handling of the reserves, noting Clifford since represents Standard Oil of California after leaving the White House post in 1969.
In Cincinnati three railroad unions filed a petition with the federal Court of Appeals asking to stay execution of the no strike order and to permit a Supreme Court appeal to determine the constitutionality of the government seizure of the railroads.
