Industry pushing citrus out of Orange County
Industry forecasts drastic agricultural shift in Orange County as irrigation and land use trends reduce citrus. County agricultural commissioner William Fitchen cites state data predicting oranges drop to 900 irrigated acres by 2010, with no commercial deciduous trees by 2020 and farmland converted from alfalfa and field crops. The Irvine Company is expanding citrus with over 1,000 acres planted and 100,000 Valencia trees this year to replace losses and sustain higher value crops.

Discovery of the smallest known star LP 327-186 found near Taurus
University of Minnesota astronomer Prof Willem J Luyten reports the discovery of a tiny white dwarf star in Taurus about 100 light years away. The star, LP 327-186, density 200 million times water, massing far more than a human, invisible to the naked eye at magnitude 18. It was found with the Mt Palomar 48 inch Schmidt telescope and suggests a degenerate stripped atomic core possibly half the Moon’s diameter.
