Reports say Israeli jets attacked Arab bases as heavy artillery battles flare across the region. Iraqi forces were said to be moving into Syria while diplomatic dispatches from Damascus reached Beirut via Beirut.
President Nixon announced a modified ABM system named Safeguard to shield retaliatory forces, with two sites in 1973 at Malmstrom AFB Montana and Grand Forks AFB North Dakota. He warned of opposition and tied the plan to possible arms talks with the Soviet Union.
Forecast shows sunny conditions in San Gernerdine Valley with gusty northeast winds and heavy winds at times. In Redlands today highs near 64 and a low around 34 with day length 6:01 sunrise and 5:56 sunset. Five day outlook indicates no precipitation in Southern California with near normal temperatures.

Police Chief Reddin said tensions cooled but not ended as arrests and suspensions occurred amid calls against police on campus and memorial actions after Larry Kimmons's death.
Sen. Frank Moss of Utah becomes chair of the Senate Commerce subcommittee on Consumers, strengthening opposition to bills easing federal cigarette advertising bans. Moss vows hearings to emphasize medical evidence as FCC and FTC push warnings. Surgeon General estimates link smoking to about one-sixth of U.S. deaths.
