Fifteen Miners Die In Kentucky Mine Blast
PARTRIDGE Ky UPD bodies of 15 miners trapped 544 miles underground when a methane gas explosion ripped through the Scotia Coal Co mine near the Virginia border were found early today. Nine killed in the explosion six suffocated from smoke and methane. The mine had been cited for high methane levels 5 to 15 percent.

Frankfurt hostage drama ends with pistol shot in court
In Frankfurt two captives survived a 29 hour siege by a masked gunman who seized a courtroom hostage in a bid for a $3 million ransom. One hostage, Gottfried Schaffrath, a 59 year old salesman, shot the terrorist with his own pistol. The wounded gunman, Rud Manz, 24, was captured as police entered room 181A. Ransom money nearly 390000 dollars was recovered. Both hostages unharmed and taken to hospital for examination.

Cable car disaster in Italy leaves 42 dead
In Trento an overhead cable snapped on Mt Cermis sending 43 skiers in a gondola to plunge 230 yards then 300 feet into a ravine. At least 15 victims were children aged 7 to 15. One 14 year old survivor, Alessandra Piovesano, was hospitalized in critical condition with severe injuries.

Gen George Brown told the Senate Budget Committee the Navy lacks power to guarantee freedom of the seas west of Hawaii.
