Justice Dept drops monopoly antitrust suits in tire case

The Justice Department dismissed civil antitrust suits against Goodyear and Firestone over lack of evidence after four years of investigation. Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Kauper said the decision was made with reluctance, with a stipulation allowing revival if needed. The suits claimed price cutting to monopolize the tire replacement market. A spokesman noted such dismissals are not unusual.

Anti-Semitism denied by Soviet speakers

At the 25th party congress in Moscow on the Kremlin rostrum Soviet and foreign Communist speakers rejected the existence of anti Semitism in the Soviet Union while praising Russia’s economy. Brezhnev was absent for part of the session amid talks with Enrico Berlinguer and Kosygin presented economic plans. Meyer Wilner of Israel’s pro Soviet party claimed anti Semitism exists in Israel and other free world nations.

American woman wins pancake race in Liberal Kansas

Sheila Turner, 22, sped 415 yards in 59.7 seconds to defend her Inter national Pancake Race title against Olney England rival Susan Hillier. Liberal leads 15 1 in the series begun in 1950. Turner received a kiss of peace from British Vice Consul Bruce Ryan and a trophy from Gov. Robert F. Bennett.

Nixon to send report on China trip to State

White House spokesman said Richard M Nixon will submit a written report to the State Department on his China visit on his own initiative. Press Secretary Ron Nessen noted a routine staffing matter and said the report was not directed to the President or a senior aide. Nixon spent eight days in China and conferred with Mao Tse-tung and other senior officials.

Handgun Control Bill Sent Back By House Panel

The House Judiciary Committee voted 17 to 16 to recommit a tough handgun control measure to subcommittee. The bill aimed to ban sale and import of cheap concealable handguns, require a 21 day waiting period, cap buys at one per month, mandate sentences for handgun crimes, and raise dealer fees. Liberal supporters criticized amendments that gutted key provisions and questioned prospects for passage this year.

PERTH AMBOY New Jersey UPI The prosecutor in the Lindbergh kidnapping case calls the claim that Charles A Lindbergh Jr is alive preposterous and beyond possibility. David T Wilentz who prosecuted Bruno Hauptmann says the suit filed by Kenneth Kerwin seeking part of Lone Eagle's estate is outrageous. Wilentz believes the Lindbergh child did not survive the 1932 abduction and the body found near the Lindbergh home belonged to him.

Boy, 12 lifts 3400 pound car to free father

In San Diego a 12-year-old boy forced the heavy car up off his father who was trapped beneath after a jack broke. Ricky Grill grabbed the bumper and lifted the front several inches allowing William Grill to slide out with a sprained ankle and minor injuries.
