In Washington the Administration’s plan to raise the national debt limit by 29 billion dollars failed 210 to 197. A cross spectrum coalition including Republicans and Democrats opposed the measure, belying broad spending and Vietnam war concerns.
Redlands today reaches 66 with 56 at night while year ago had 68 and 56. Wednesday brings 81 highs and 51 lows. Smog none and fire rules in effect. San Bernardino Valley rains unlikely with night and morning low clouds and local fog, then mostly sunny afternoons through Friday. Lows tonight 45 to 55. Interior gusty winds and slightly cooler inland Friday.
The U S 6th Fleet reports a Soviet cruiser shadowing Task Force 60 in the eastern Mediterranean near the carrier USS America. Admiral Martin warned the cruiser to clear the formation, citing dangerous interference and a near collision with the destroyer W C Lawe.
Rep. Jerome R. Waldie argues to a House appropriations subcommittee for moving Navy ammunition piers at Port Chicago to reduce broader hazards. He proposes building two new piers on Roe Island as a safer alternative to the Navy plan to condemn Port Chicago and create a two mile exclusion zone amid surrounding Contra Costa communities. The cost range discussed spans 20 to 54 million dollars, depending on site and reconstruction factors.
Paris police detained a Polish immigrant who allegedly tried to stab U.S. Ambassador Charles E. Bohlen with a 10 inch dagger as Bohlen was leaving his residence in a chauffeured limousine. Bohlen, 62, was unharmed and the embassy confirmed the incident.
Heavy rains and high winds battered the Midwest with hail and tornado warnings posted in parts of Iowa. Nebraska Kansas and Missouri reported tornadoes and damage. Creighton and Ames reported heavy rainfall while towns faced power outages and flooded streets as storms moved east from the Rockies to New England.
Egypt accepted the United Nations cease fire after Israeli forces decisively defeated an Egyptian counter attack in the Sinai Desert. The Cairo government had earlier defied the cease fire and sent its armed forces into action. Israel reported heavy losses for Egypt and said only one pocket of resistance remained west of the Suez Canal. The fighting involved three main Sinai areas and included air and tank battles with numerous aircraft shot down on both sides.

SACRAMENTO UPI Senator William E Coombs proposes tax relief for farmers whose land is classified subdivision property. The measure would let eligible farmers apply for a special assessment when agricultural land becomes subdivision property. The plan, sent to the Senate Finance Committee, aims to curb higher residential taxes pushing farmers off ranches and truck farms.
Secretary General Thant announced that the United Arab Republic has decided to accept the cease fire calls as outlined by two Security Council resolutions, conditional on the other party also accepting. Israel and Jordan had already signaled acceptance, with U.S. efforts pressing for disengagement and withdrawal of forces.
The UPI report states that the USS Liberty, a U.S. communications vessel, was attacked in international waters near the Sinai by Israeli forces using a torpedo and possibly aircraft. Four sailors were killed and 53 wounded. The ship, armed only with four 50 caliber machine guns, remained afloat and on course toward allied vessels. Israel apologized, and U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk delivered a protest. The Liberty, a converted World War II Liberty ship, was sailing from Rota to relay communications and assist evacuations in the Middle East. Commander William McGonagle commanded the vessel, based out of Norfolk, Virginia.
The Daily Facts issue announces a 72 page list of tax delinquencies in San Bernardino County. Publication is required by state law and delinquent properties may be sold by the county tax collector after a period. The list also appears on June 15 and June 22 under a state ordered schedule of fees borne by delinquent taxpayers.
