Riley's covert mission saves California citrus from scale threat
In 1887 Congress balked at funding Riley to seek a natural enemy for cottony cushion scale. He secretly aided an exhibit to send entomologist Koehler to Australia and New Zealand where the vedalia beetle was found. The beetle’s release restored California orchards, boosting citrus shipments from 700 to over 2,000 carloads by 1889, and the pest control endures in a $130 million industry.
