The compromise would have created a federal Fair Employment Practices Commission with witness attendance power.
UNITED NATIONS Russia vetoed an American bid to have the UN Security Council declare Communist germ warfare charges false and condemn propaganda. The vote was 9 to 1 with Pakistan abstaining, Malik using Russia’s veto for the first time in six years to defeat the proposal by U.S. Ambassador Ernest A. Gross.
The Red Cross said 20 people were killed and 202 missing after a July 2 3 typhoon struck central Philippine islands. The storm displaced more than 4300 residents.
In Berlin Maj Gen Lemmel E Mathewson demanded the return of Dr Walter Linse, abducted outside his West Berlin home by men believed to be East German police agents. He warned the Soviet Control Commission to act and turn over the criminals for prosecution. The abduction occurred as police pursued, with the kidnappers entering the Soviet zone after crossing the border barrier.
California delegates at Chicago convened to vote 57 of 70 for Eisenhower on the Georgia delegates dispute while eight supported Taft. Five abstained or were absent as Gen Eisenhower addressed the delegation amid cheers.
