Top Air Force Navigator Killed In Palomar Crash
Lt. Col. Erwin L. Williams, 40, a renowned Air Force navigator and chief of the Standards Board, died after a B47 crash near Palomar Observatory. Three crew members parachuted to safety, with Williams suffering a fatal skull fracture possibly from impact or parachute entanglement. The craft, valued at $3 million, crashed five miles from Palomar Observatory after taking off from March AFB, igniting a 10 acre fire. Survivors include his Riverside wife and two children. The other parachutists were Capt. Orville W. Wray, 1st Lt. Kenneth W. Badison, and Capt. Salvador Orosco. An investigation is underway.

Barge Arizona Star sinks off Florida with eight missing
A 40 foot barge named Arizona Star with eight crew aboard broke its tow line and sank about 10 miles offshore in heavy seas near Palm Beach. One man was rescued while Coast Guard crews and rescue aircraft searched for the remaining seven as winds reached 25 knots and rain hindered operations. The barge carried about 5,000 tons of sulfur from Beaumont to Savannah. The Sally R tug reported the distress call.
