San Francisco State College prepares for a strike by Local 1352 of the American Federation of Teachers when Christmas vacation ends Monday morning. Union leaders warn the walkout could effectively close the campus unless talks with the Board of Trustees yield educational reforms, grievances, and a written contract.
President elect Nixon named Elliott Richardson Massachusetts attorney general and Alexis Johnson career diplomat to fill undersecretary roles in the State Department. He also said Ellsworth Bunker may stay on in Vietnam, and Pedersen will be counselor. Nixon arrived in New York after a Chicago dinner to toast Johnson.
The Civil Aeronautics Board approved seven airlines to begin domestic routes to Hawaii effective March 5. Airlines include American Braniff Continental Northwest Trans World United and Western with service to Hilo and Honolulu. American’s status remains suspended pending petitions for reconsideration.
Redlands today reaches 76 with 53 overnight and 11 am readings. San Bernardino Valley stays fair and warm through Sunday with gusty canyon winds. Southern California remains warm with localized canyon gusts and no smog. Frost is not expected tonight, and the lowest temperature falls to about 40 degrees. Continuous warm trend continues through the period.
Lebanon's 15,000 university students staged their first joint strike demanding compulsory military training and a war footing, vowing no return to classes until those responsible for the Beirut Airport raid are punished. They called for free detained Arab commandos and a popular militia, and backed Arab guerrilla action against Israel as regional tension rose alongside Jordanian executions and ceasefire clashes.
Denver based OCAW union says about 60 000 oil industry workers in more than 20 states walked off their jobs after failed last ditch talks with over 60 oil firms including Texaco Gulf American and Standard Oil. federal mediators urged continued negotiations while Grospiron authorized a general strike if talks fail. union sought 72 cents an hour raise over 23 months plus fringe benefits.
The 1988 County Grand Jury reports that Los Angeles County's 140 million medical program gives over 10 million yearly in unnecessary and illegal free aid. The audit cites the County Department of Hospitals as running the program with minimal eligibility limits, funded mostly by state and federal dollars.
Riverside, UPI The 13 year old Francisco Navier de Jal Paz Rube-Cincotta will be adopted by Patrick O Mara, a Riverside man who first adopted him in Tijuana in 1967. Superior Court Judge Robert B Dauber ruled the adoption legal and set January 17 for further orders on arrangements and delivery while O Mara works. Pancho will take the name Pancho O Mara and await details of suitable living arrangements.
UPI reporting from Saigon says Allied troops ambushed and killed 45 Viet Cong in Mekong Delta canals and swamps while U.S. forces killed 46 Toro Communists in other operations near Saigon. Navy patrol boats and Cobra helicopters supported infantry in the fight southwest of Saigon. A South Vietnamese battalion killed 23 guerrillas in a 30 minute canal engagement. The drive aims to clear the capital area of Communist forces before a predicted massed attack on Saigon.
In Londonderry, thousands of Roman Catholic civil rights demonstrators and Protestant militants clashed on city outskirts. Police and riot squads battled both sides as 22 people were injured in minutes, swelling total injuries to 71 amid a four day Belfast to Londonderry march by Catholic demonstrators protesting discrimination.
