An Overseas National Airways DC10 charter carrying 380 Turkish pilgrims from Mecca to Ankara crashed after an emergency landing in fog near Istanbul. The left engine tore off, flames erupted, and the plane skidded into mud. Two crew members were injured.

An unidentified woman in her early 20s died after a horse she rode bolted onto train tracks near Canoga Avenue and Marilla Street when a passing train frightened the animal. Both horse and rider were killed in the collision.
Jewel thief arson damages Pasadena home after Rose Bowl
Prisk Paddock returned home from the Rose Bowl game to find a fire at his Pasadena residence. Firefighters said $20,000 in damage occurred after a blaze started to cover a burglary of about $12,000 in jewelry.
