A teachers strike in Albuquerque led to the closure of public schools after most of the 2900 teachers stayed home. State teachers organization threatened a statewide walkout if demands for a special legislative session on school financing are not met. Superintendent Robert Chisholm closed schools to avoid unqualified guidance.
UPI reports U. S. Commissioner Fritz Windhorst ordered H. Rap Brown held on a $50,000 bond for grand jury action after FBI agent William H. Smith Jr testified Brown threatened the agent and his family in San Francisco. Brown is a Black Power advocate. The report notes other unrelated items from Washington and Thant’s statements on Vietnam peace talks.
After a hour long meeting the White House reported Thant conveyed his impressions of peace prospects. Johnson reaffirmed the desire for a peaceful settlement and continued validity of the San Antonio formula. The formula bars a bombing halt unless productive talks seem likely and the Communists gain no military advantage. In weather: Frost tonight 40 to 44. Redlands district. Patchy fog late tonight and Friday morning. Southern California patchy fog near the coast then fair and warmer through Friday.
U S Marines pressed past napalm to seal off the Imperial City fortress in Hue after 23 days of fierce fighting that left U S deaths near 543 last week. Marines raised a flag on a watchtower, secured the Nguyen Hoang Bridge, and warned of heavy, costly final clearance as Viet Cong defenses dwindled. News also reported radar guided raids on Hanoi Hanoi Hannah’s station, and large Communist forces massing near Saigon with seven mile rockets threatening Tan Son Nhut airbase.
Redlands forecast shows a high of 68 and a low of 51 degrees with conditions easing by early afternoon. Strong sun early gives way to cooler breezes as the day progresses, and skies remain mostly clear through the afternoon hours.
President Johnson asks Congress for a multi year package totaling 6.3 billion dollars for urban renewal including 2.34 billion for housing units over five years and 2.18 billion for anti poverty programs. He also urges a 10 percent income tax increase to fund open housing and fair housing aims amid urban renewal plans in 1969 and beyond.
In Tallahassee a drive to convene a self starter session to address Florida's 25,000 striking teachers began as Gov. Claude Kirk faced 6,000 teachers in a Miami stadium and they refused to return. Senator Barrow urged Kirk to sign the $254.5 million education package, while Kirk signaled possible veto.
Washington authorities led by White House officials search for leads in the predawn bombing of the Soviet Embassy. No arrests have been made and officials say the building sustained damage but no injuries. The incident sparked international exchanges, with the Soviets accusing U.S. authorities of lax protection and the United States denying charges while vowing a full investigation. President Johnson expressed relief that no one was hurt.
Republican strategists urge that Ray C. Bliss decide who heads the 1968 platform committee to avoid intra party fights. The plan would let Bliss decide after a meeting of the Arrangements Committee whether a governor may share chair with Senator Everett M. Dirksen, with vice chair posts split between governors and lawmakers. Governor Shafer and others seek cochair role while Dirksen named chair of the committee. Daniel Evans named convention keynoter.
Rep. Robert L. Leggett, D California, forecast President Johnson will seek an additional 100,000 U.S. troops beyond the 525,000 ceiling for Vietnam. Sen. James B. Pearson, R Kansas, supported draft increases and possible reserve calls to back the buildup. Defense officials denied any plan yet approved to recall GI second-tour personnel.
A shabbily dressed man claiming political asylum hijacked Delta Air Lines Flight 843 from Tampa with 109 aboard. He forced the DC-8 to Havana, where he was removed by Cuban soldiers. Havana Radio gave varying identities for the suspect, said to be 29 and last living in St. Petersburg, Florida. The plane returned to Miami after a three hour layover, with the hijacker in Cuban custody.
United Press International reports Romney presses the war issue in New Hampshire amid party splits. Nixon faces criticism over Vietnam policy while Romney, Reagan, and McCarthy attack administration farm and race policies. Polls show Nixon slipping slightly as Romney gains in discussions with GOP leaders.
