Slippery Rains Trigger Mountain Slides Close Highways
A tropical storm spawned heavy rain across Southern California causing mud and rock slides that closed Highway 18 Rim of the World between Snow Valley and Big Bear Lake and Highway 39 near Crystal Lake. One death was reported as a Malibu driver lost control on rain slicked roads. Rains moved into Arizona and Nevada with snow expected in Nevada mountains and winter warnings issued across the region.

Moderate Alaska quake felt over wide area without damage
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck south central Alaska early today, centered about 175 miles west of Anchorage. It was felt in Anchorage and Kodiak but did not generate a tsunami. The quake occurred at 5:09 a.m. AST near a seismically active zone, about 275 miles west of the 1964 Good Friday event.

Chrysler recalls 1.3 million cars over engine stall risk
Chrysler announces a recall of 1.3 million cars including Dodge Darts Plymouth Valiants and Dodge Aspen Plymouth Volares with 225 cubic inch six cylinder or 318 cubic inch eight cylinder engines. Dealers have limited parts and owners will not be notified until supplies arrive. The fix covers accelerator pump seal and some coolant controlled exhaust gas recirculation switches.
