U S troops clashed with North Vietnamese forces along the Cambodian border near Saigon. Helicopter gunships tracked two North Vietnamese companies, about 270 men, as battle continued past dark. Thirty-two bunkers reported in the area. U S casualties were not disclosed.
In Messina Sicily a five year old boy played with a metal toy, later identified as a 1940 hand grenade. His mother confiscated it after two days. Armament experts subsequently exploded the device and found it in perfect working order.
Edward Falk a 43 year old Newton New Jersey man survived a three hour thirteen minute heart and lung transplant at New York Hospital for emphysema. He received organs from a 50 year old woman donor. Surgeon Dr C Walton Lillehei led a 14 member team as Falk faced possible organ rejection infection and breathing pathway needs. Corneas and kidneys were also transplanted from the donor with one kidney already given to a Mount Sinai patient. A brain hemorrhage donor caused the organs to be available and the case spurred discussion of a national tissue matching data bank.
Tokyo reports show the pro American Liberal Democratic Party atop the Diet race with 213 of 486 seats decided earlySunday. Prime Minister Hisakai Sato wins a strong mandate for Pacific partnership with the United States while the Japan Socialist party suffers a sharp setback.
A New York to Chicago United Airlines Boeing 727 carrying 29 aboard was hijacked to Cuba Friday night. Gunman identified as M. Martinez, speaking with a Spanish accent, produced a snub-nosed .38 and threatened to go to Cuba. The jet, valued at about four million dollars, landed safely at Miami and later returned to O’Hare with 17 passengers to Chicago.
Stockholm reports the first Czechoslovakian group visiting the West in a month chose to remain in Sweden for Christmas. Police say 52 of 74 staying members applied for political asylum, while 24 went into hiding and plan to file with aliens police next week.
A UPI report says a 22 member Pentagon team left Prague by train on Christmas Day for an on site tour of My Lai evidence in South Vietnam. The tour, arranged by Czechoslovak authorities, aims to determine if a cover up occurred and whether evidence has been produced.
United Press International reports a fourth winter storm in two weeks dumps up to 20 inches across Maine to New York. Thousands are stranded at Kennedy LaGuardia Newark O Hare and Chicago O Hare. New York Mayor Lindsay returns from the Bahamas to oversee sanitation after the storm.
The Indian Creek Folk Rock Festival near San Luis Obispo was cancelled after county officials banned gatherings of more than 5,000 for 90 days. Deputies remained to inform late arrivals, while a few fans departed. Promoters hope to reschedule in late January.
A Greek freighter Khian Star and a U S Air Force plane searched the mid Pacific about 1500 miles northwest of Hawaii for 25 missing crewmen from the ammunition ship Badger State after an explosion and fire tore a hole in its aft. Fourteen were rescued by the Greek vessel while the rest remained missing as stormy seas and darkness hampered rescue efforts. The Badger State was carrying thousands of bombs and rockets destined for Da Nang Vietnam when it abandoned ship.
New York UP I reports the National Industrial Conference Board says America's GNP will surpass 1 trillion dollars in 1970 and there will be no recession. Eleven economists foresee growth with inflation driving most gains. GNP rise about 5.7 percent with real growth near 2 percent. Inflation edges up unemployment peaks around midyear then improves. Industrial production to dip early 1970 then recover.
Budget Director Robert Mayo remarks on the Nixon administration projecting a budget over 200 billion dollars for the first time. He humorously says, We are closing all the zippers between revenue and expenditures and this involves some very heavy breathing.
President Nixon, after meeting with budget officials and aides, indicated he intends to sign the tax reform package despite its projected 2.5 billion revenue loss for fiscal 1971. He said budget trimming decisions assumed the bill would become law and noted the House Senate Conference Committee reduced the revenue loss, though the total still exceeds the original administration bill.
Marijuana sniffing dogs gave the Miami Rock Festival a near clean bill of health as 85,000 fans were forecast for the 72 hour event in chilly weather. Sheriff Ed Stack said only a few marijuana packets were found buried at the 440 acre Hollywood Speedway site. A wind gust injured a girl installing a light show, delaying work, while Billy Graham planned an 11 a.m. sermon for attendees.
San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, facing a libel suit against Look magazine and questions over fee-splitting in Washington, has agreed to have his law books opened in a new Oregon investigation. The pledge expands the mayoral scrutiny across multiple states as officials seek details of his legal affairs and potential conflicts of interest.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew departed Honolulu for a 25 day trip to the Far East with a planned military briefing at Pearl Harbor and tight security. He aimed to gauge reactions to Nixon doctrine foreign policy and may visit Vietnam with Judy Agnew alongside Admiral John S. McCain Jr.'s security area in Makalapa.
UPI reports in San Dimas that a four hour old baby boy was found nude on a denim jacket in front of a liquor store by a routes delivery man. The infant was taken to Pomona Valley Community Hospital and pronounced in excellent condition. Authorities have not identified the mother.
In Effingham Illinois Jack Hightower and Bob Mihlbacher, longtime card pals, consider swapping to a different Christmas card next year to cut costs. For 14 years they have exchanged the same card adding a note each year as the dog-eared card grows bulkier while postage rises.
UPI reports American financier H Ross Perot of Texas was rejected by Hanoi to fly a plane load of Christmas gifts to U S prisoners in North Vietnam. He left Vientiane for Moscow where the gifts will be mailed to about 1 400 prisoners. Perot visited the Soviet embassy and the Pathet Lao while seeking landing permission. He spoke to prisoners via interpreter and said they were treated humanely.
