Banks nationwide hiked their prime lending rate to 6.5 percent from 6 percent as part of anti inflation action. The move follows the Federal Reserve lifting its discount rate from 5 to 5.5 percent, signaling higher borrowing costs for consumers on homes cars and other purchases.
Modesto California report says 67 year old pilot Bill Hackbarth tried a 10 minute test flight in a rebuilt 1918 DeHaviland 4. Engine heat forced another grounding as radiator leak remains unfixed from the first leg of the cross country trip.

In Long Beach police say Raymond Maxwell thirty nine, robbed a bank Friday then fled to a nearby saloon where officers captured him a few minutes later. A woman teller who chased Maxwell into the tavern aided the arrest, credited by authorities with solving the case.
The FBI placed James Earl Ray, a Missouri prison escapee, on its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list to boost dissemination of his pictures and details. Ray, alias Eric Starvo Galt, has been sought since King was killed in Memphis on April 4. He is described as armed and extremely dangerous.
