California Governor Ronald Reagan asks the Legislature for broad tax reform including a voluntary payroll withholding option with a 2 percent credit and quarterly prepayment. The plan aims to cut residential property taxes by about 40 percent and raise state income tax by about 50 percent to fund school costs, plus broaden sales taxes and eliminate the business inventory tax.
President Nixon greets Jordan’s King Hussein at the White House for a three day visit as both urge a sincere search for peace in the explosive Middle East conflict. Hussein recalls long friendship and hopes for stronger U.S.–Jordan ties.
