President Nixon and Vice President Agnew met privately for an hour at the White House to discuss allegations Agnew faced over a Maryland kickback scheme. Officials did not disclose details of the discussion.
Northern California gas dealers vote to shutter service stations from today 4 30 p m to Tuesday to press for price freeze relief. About 1100 dealers join in the CSSA protest signaling unity and potential 75 percent participation while seeking lower operating hours to cut overhead.
Washington The Cost of Living Council told Congress that retail gasoline dealers may be allowed to raise prices by Oct 1 amid threats of station shutdowns. Dealers praise unity while opposing Phase IV and condemn a proposed one cent price boost. Marin Sonoma and Eureka counties expect closures.

U S consumer prices rise 1.8 percent in August the largest monthly gain since 1947. Food costs surge with grocery prices up 7.4 percent while seasonally adjusted figures reach 7.7 percent. The report cites lifted food freezes and a 10 percent annualized pace over six months.
State Forester Howard Bramwell urged hunters to be extremely careful as little rain leaves dry conditions. He advised contacting landowners for campfire rules on private land and to check with Diamond International or the U S Forest Service for hunts on their lands.
Tehama County planners denied a use permit for a mobile home park two miles northeast of Red Bluff over soil and development concerns but at the Supervisors request placed conditions on a permit. The Supervisors will reconvene next Tuesday after studying those conditions.
Red Bluff High School Spartans will ride the rooters bus to Novato Saturday with a 7 a.m. departure. Standard Oil assures Marin County stations will be open for the trip. A local gasoline retailers association forms as Red Bluff station owners meet and plan.
The Senate approved Henry A. Kissinger to serve as secretary of state, elevating the White House adviser and architect of Nixon's foreign policy to the cabinet post. Supporters praised his intellect while Sen. Fulbright warned that detente with Russia and China may be unraveling amid the confirmation.
