U S military leaders privately assess that North Vietnamese and Viet Cong cannot sustain large offensives after last winter's Tet shocks. They credit heavy casualties, improved allied intelligence, and air strikes by B52 and fighters for halting major attacks.
Allied forces repelled two major North Vietnamese attacks northwest of Saigon, killing 67 enemy troops at a cost of nine South Vietnamese militiamen. In other clashes south of Da Nang and in the Mekong Delta, U S and South Vietnamese units suffered 24 American, 16 South Vietnamese casualties with 91 enemy killed and 81 wounded on both sides. U S pilots reported downing their first MIG in seven weeks. an F 105 was shot down with the pilot missing. A Viet Cong force attacked the U S 25th Infantry Division camp near Tay Ninh City, leaving three Americans wounded after heavy fighting with rockets and small arms.
Gov. Reagan gets a $261 million property tax revision after the Assembly passes it 78 to 2 and sends it to his desk. The plan, aiming to aid the burdened taxpayer, awaits voter approval at the November general election alongside Prop. 9 which would tighten future property tax use. Senate action on Bay Area Transit funding remains unsettled as lawmakers resume session.
Sirhan Bishara Sirhan will be tried before Judge Hersbert V. Walker in Los Angeles. Walker, the presiding judge named for the November 1 trial date, has handled more criminal cases than any other jurist in the county and once ruled the death penalty constitutional.
The Aid to Retarded Children group in Tehama County schedules a November 4 fundraiser countywide to support the Opportunity Center and pay summer camp debts. Members swap participation in the Unified Crusade for the event and plan a November tea to recruit more members.
Susan Sutherland accused in an August 20 shooting at Fire Mountain Lodge east of Mineral. Judge Noel Watkins bound her over to Superior Court for assault with intent to commit murder after Betty Sutherland was wounded in the foot by a .38 pistol during an argument.
Teen fair features live entertainment dancing fashion shows judo exhibitions and a car display at Tehama Totem faire grounds from 11 am to midnight. Adults may attend with a teen. Prizes loot bags and a farthest traveler prize add incentives. Tickets available at main gate near Highway 99E east of Red Bluff.
The 1933 Corn ing Olive Festival in Corning, sponsored by the Corning Jay-Dees, is set for Saturday Oct 19. Olive Queen contestants from Corning High School may apply through Ernie Hubbard at Toby's Market. Cash prizes include $100 for the Olive Queen, runner-ups up to $75, gowns, roses, dinner, and a trophy. Entertainment will be provided by Es Marks.
A formal dining-in was held at the Red Bluff 859th Radar Squadron to honor retiring Major Ray Bilbo. Major Floyd M. Yates Jr. will replace him. Col. Wayne E Reynard spoke as guest. Promotions included seven airmen to sergeant and others to staff sergeant and technical sergeant. The event marked Bilbo’s more than two decades of service, with highlights from World War II bomber missions and later instructor roles.
