Fire Response Policy Debated By Council

Red Bluff officials debated a new fire department policy limiting initial responses to non structural fires. Fire Chief Tom Gauthier said he was coerced into adopting the rule, while Mayor James Hoffman questioned its viability as Councilman Joe Miller claimed the measure was imposed. City Manager Herbert Nelson said he did not propose the change.

New Fire Department Policy Reversed by Red Bluff Chief

Red Bluff Fire Chief Tom Gauthier scrapped a controversial response policy after council scrutiny. He said he returned to the old alarm policy with minor changes and criticized city manager guidance and staff pressure on his job security.

Red Bluff Council Approves Garbage Rate Increase

Red Bluff City Council approved a raise for garbage collection rates proposed by Red Bluff Disposal Co. with 3 votes yes and 1 against. The meeting also updated travel trailer and mobile home park ordinances and discussed tax and contract amendments, funding for Parks and Recreation classes, and county participation in county resident share. A public hearing was set to proceed.

Weather forecast shows showers and cooling later this week

Increasing cloudiness with rain likely today and tonight. Showers likely Thursday and slightly cooler. Southeasterly to southerly winds 10 to 20 mph rising to 15 to 30 mph in the afternoon with highs in the 70s to low 80s and 50s tonight. Friday partly cloudy with similar temperatures. River levels listed at several gauges and sunset and sunrise times provided.

Auto cost increases banned by CLC in wage talks

The Cost of Living Council blocked any auto price hikes until labor bargaining finishes. Chrysler sought a $73 per vehicle rise for 1974 models, but Dunlop said no new increases would be considered until the wage negotiations wrap and a general economic case is submitted. The Big Four automakers face a unified review of planned price boosts.

Overhead Underground Service Proposal Referred by Tehama Board

Tehama County Board of Supervisors referred a suggested ordinance to require underground electrical and telephone service for new commercial and multi dwelling projects. The measure, spurred by Corning City Council concerns, would be studied by the underground committee for potential complications and cost differences versus overhead lines.

Nixon outlines plan to boost sagging U S housing industry

President Nixon proposed a $5.5 billion boost to U S housing and steps to ease the credit squeeze. He urged Congress to approve $2.5 billion in additional loan commitments by savings and loan institutions and backed forward commitments from the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

Chile plans white paper on Allende era corruption

Chile's new military rulers announced plans to issue a white paper detailing alleged corruption during the Allende government. Adm. Jose Toribio Merino said the document would reveal a level of immorality unseen in the prior three years. The claim follows the coup that ousted Allende on September 11 and left reports of his death.

Gas Stations Close In Protest Against Price Freeze

UPI reports stations nationwide closed or planned shutdowns in protest of Phase IV gasoline price freezes. Massachusetts bore the brunt with hundreds idling on Tuesday and a survey showing about 50 percent of the 4,000 stations closed. A temporary restraining order barred owners from collective shutdowns.
