Red Bluff observes Constitution Day with flags displayed in the community. The 1787 Constitution established the U S government, and Red Bluff Lions Club volunteers laid out the flags as part of patriotic observances.
The Associated Press reports scattered showers and thunderstorms from the northern Plains to southern Maine with over 10 inches of rain in northwestern Ohio. Roads bridges and basements flooded as rivers swelled and storms waned after Sunday night violence.
Variable cloudiness continues through Tuesday with widely scattered showers near mountains. Southerly winds 5 to 15 mph. Outlook Wednesday is fair with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. River levels may rise slightly over the next two days at Bend Bridge and nearby gauges.
Israeli forces ended a 32hour search and destroy mission inside Lebanon after destroying 150 guerrilla shelters and killing about 60 militants. Three Israelis were killed and six wounded. Lebanese reports put Israeli deaths at 18 with eight Lebanese soldiers killed and 12 wounded.
National Farmers Union testified that big grain firms could have earned up to 100 million dollars in windfall profits from export subsidies linked to wheat sales to the Soviet Union. The House subcommittee probes alleged inside information and subsidy manipulation as USDA data shows subsidies at 47 cents per bushel during a one week window.
Three Red Bluff Union High School seniors William Mulholland announced as semifinalists in the 1973 Merit Scholarship Program. Ann Baskins Scott Couse and Kirk Smith among about 15 000 semifinalists from over 1 million students nationwide.
The Tehama County Sheriff reports a rash of weekend thefts including a public address system taken from the top of the Los Molinos High School football field announcing stand. Thieves scaled the building while the door was locked.
A hit and run on the 200 block of Oak Street early today is under investigation by Red Bluff police. Joseph Allen of 404 Madison Red Bluff reported hearing a crash at 1 41 a m and seeing a car leave the scene with moderate damage to his fender. A CHP officer attempted to pursue the vehicle. SAN SIMEON AP Earnest advocates of Proposition 20 have completed the first 200 miles of their 600 mile cycle from San Francisco to San Diego.
Nixon aides claim Social Security would escape cuts under a proposed spending ceiling, while defense may face reductions. Caspar Weinberger testified the ceiling is broad and "academic" to promise Social Security protection. George Shultz urged cuts "everywhere" with possible defense savings, as Congress weighs raising the debt limit to 465 billion through June 19, 1973.
A group of about 65 county state and federal officials will depart Redding early tomorrow for a day-long boat trip down the Sacramento River. Hosted by the BLM and with guests from the California Advisory Board for the BLM the tour aims to assess including the river in the Wild and Scenic Rivers plan. The day starts with breakfast at 6 30 at the Holiday Inn in Redding with a Lake California lunch stop and a Red Bluff arrival around 4 pm. Bus transportation will return guests to Red Bluff to collect their cars.
Nixon issued a proclamation boosting No. 2 fuel oil imports from 45 000 to 50 000 barrels daily through year end plus an extra 10 per cent in the last quarter. Officials say this raises daily imports by up to 9 400 barrels.
A noon crash on Interstate 5 near Snively Road injures Loren Kessner 41 of Red Bluff after a tire blowout caused a car in front to spin. Lola Jeske 51 of Angwin collides with Kessner while Amy OBrien 36 of San Francisco drives the blowout car.
Lester Cutler, a 51 year old textile mill owner in Gastonia N C, introduces a three day work week for his employees. He calls it historic like Ford s five dollar day. Most workers have four days off while working 12 hour days.
