Firefighters from U S Forest Service conservation camps and lumbermen work alongside agriculture and forestry crews battling a large blaze near Paskenta. Air attacks aid the effort as ground teams cope with steep terrain and shifting winds.
Red Bluff High School trustees debated inter district transfer policy and allowed appeals to the board. Superintendent Glen Smith cited county guidelines while Lou Bosetti supported district decisions. Sixty percent of transfer requests involving Red Bluff students were discussed and a formal inter district agreement was planned.
U S Forest Service official Lynn Murray said the Mendocino National Forest blaze west of Paskenta is under control but not contained. The 1,500 acre fire, started Monday, burned Ponderosa pine with about 50,000 dollars in damage, and was fought by 550 firefighters and six aircraft dropping 70,000 gallons of retardant.
South Vietnamese Hac Bao troops found a complex with more than 400000 rounds of ammunition, wire, fuel, and five tons of rice at Khe Sanh near the Laos border. The discovery is described as the biggest cache in recent months by the Vietnamese command.
Tehara County supervisors postpone until Sept 28 a decision on county support for the four‑county Community Action Agency. Nancy Hedlund outlined many CAA programs while state official Dean MacGrath cited concern at the state level but did not specify. State Corrections Commissioner Russell G Oswald says hostages slain in the Attica revolt died of gunshot wounds though the wound source remains unexplained. The death toll rose to 42 with the death of a critically wounded inmate, bringing totals to 10 guards and 32 prisoners as guard unrest spreads to other state prisons.
Tehama County Rural Fire Dept firefighters assisted by El Camino Richfield and Corning Jaycee volunteers tackled four separate grass and brush fires yesterday. Fires near Corning Richfield Dairyville Red Bluff damaged grass stubble fence posts and a truck exhaust likely sparked one blaze. State forestry trucks aided two of the daytime incidents with losses estimated at twenty dollars to fifty dollars in fence posts and minor property damage.
