Delegates from 82 nations adopt the Tokyo Declaration and begin negotiations to rewrite trade rules. U.S. Treasury Secretary George Shultz expects a separate world monetary reform draft by 1974.
In Santiago the ruling military junta ended sporadic gun battles as tanks left the presidential palace area. Allende’s death is stated as self-inflicted during the Sept. 11 assault with burial the next day. Hortensia Bussi de Allende accuses a fascist coup and secrecy.
Shasta College trustees reported evening division enrollment projected at about 6,200, up 25 percent from last fall, with 3,500 recorded at the halfway mark and many students taking two classes. A plan for outreach to northern California regions and off campus learning centers was discussed.
The Soviet Union launched Cosmos 586, an unmanned earth satellite. It orbited every 105 minutes with an 83 degree inclination, reaching a maximum distance of 639 miles and a minimum of 613 miles per Tass report.
United Press International reports that in two Mediterranean dogfights Israel claimed 13 Syrian warplanes were shot down, with Syria confirming five Israeli and eight Syrian planes lost. Israeli commander Maj. Gen. Benjamin Peled said about 30 planes participated. one Israeli jet was shot down and the pilot rescued at sea.
Washington officials warn a record agricultural boom does not lift dairy farmers. ERS reports milk output falls as feed costs soar, cow numbers shrink, and slaughter prices stay high. Fall and winter could see tight milk and dairy product supplies despite higher prices.
At 3 am at the intersection of old 99W and South Avenue south of Corning California Highway Patrol reports Manuel Delpinto 50 of Castro Valley and Paul Grayson 37 of Corning were involved. Grayson pulling from a lot leaned over to close a door and struck the gas instead of brakes driving under the last trailer. Grayson sustained severe facial lacerations and was taken to Corning Memorial Hospital. The accident caused total damage to Grayson’s pickup and minor damage to the trailer.
Forecast shows fair conditions through Saturday with little temperature change. Southerly winds around 15 mph, highs in the 80s, lows in the 50s, and similar highs expected Sunday. U S Court of Appeals proposed that President Nixon and Special Prosecutor Cox settle the Watergate tapes dispute privately to avoid a constitutional ruling. Cox was willing. the President had not replied. Judges urged review by Cox, the President or delegate, and Charles Alan Wright to seek a partial disclosure to a grand jury.
