The California 54 day rule sets a Thursday deadline for the November general election. Assistant registrar Jeanne Saunder urges registration before then. A State Supreme Court ruling allows late registrants to be registered through October 8.
Corning officials met briefly with Acting Mayor Gary Strack and councilmen Henry Wood and James Darrow present. The session approved the $20,271.24 August salaries for city employees and directed letters to four Sixth Ward property owners.
Corning Police Chief Jerry Rowe released figures to the city council showing 27 criminal offenses last month with four arrests and four others cleared or unfounded. The report also lists 21 traffic citations from 29 violations and 5 797 patrol miles.

Herbert Miles district engineer for State Division of Highways District 2 will join a no host dinner tomorrow night in Red Bluff with the Red Bluff Tehama County chambers of commerce highway committees. He will be accompanied by assistant district engineer Ralph Harkness. Gil Swift of the California State Chamber of Commerce Jack Kassel Sacramento liaison engineer and Bob Boles secretary of the State Highway Commission will also attend. Wives of committee members have been invited.
California Health official Earl Brian says the state has an overabundance of hospitals and many should close to stop wasted funds on empty beds. He cites county hospitals as particularly inefficient and predicts more closures as Medi Cal cost controls tighten.
President Nixon outlined campaign plans in a three hour meeting with Cabinet Republicans and campaign officials. A million volunteers will canvass and register voters locally starting Saturday. Nixon to Camp David later today for discussions with aides.
George McGovern and Edward Kennedy campaign jointly on a five day, 16 hour schedule from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh with large like minded crowds. Kennedy jokes about Sargent Shriver as McGovern’s potential running mate and praises Main Street U S A values.
Denise Sprayson of Maxwell Ontario survived five days pinned beneath a wrecked car while her husband and two friends lay dead nearby. Coroner Dr G L Stewart said he could not explain her survival and described her wounds as heavily infested with crawling creatures. She is in a Guelph hospital recovering.
