Mitchell Trying To Delay Trial
In New York UPI reports defense lawyers for former cabinet members John N. Mitchell and Maurice Stans sought a delay of their perjury conspiracy trial in federal court. The courtroom was crowded as Fleming argued the speedy trial rule would be perverted by moving ahead. If denied, jury selection for up to a week would proceed with 1,500 jurors summoned. The 16 count indictment ties a $200,000 Vesco donation to Nixon’s 1972 campaign to conspiracy obstruction of justice and perjury. Vesco fled and is believed in Costa Rica. Dean is named a co conspirator but not a defendant.
