Great Is Consensus On Junior Round-Up

The 1972 Red Bluff Junior Round-Up drew record crowds and prize money with 612 entries and 300 contestants. Winners include Flint Hemsted of Anderson for all around saddle and Donna Easley of Redding for the girls all around, as scores and placements rack up across bareback riding bull riding barrel racing and goat tying.

Weekend Break-ins Hit Maywood Packing Co and West St School

Corning police report two burglaries over the weekend. Maywood Packing Co was broken into at 8:16 a.m. Saturday with two Coke machines tampered with and about $10 stolen after a lock to the office door was removed. West St Elementary School also reported a break-in.

Five hurt in Tehama County weekend crashes

Five people were injured on Tehama County roads over the weekend with three in serious condition. Shirley Neighbors, 4, fell from a pickup driven by Nicanor Gonzalez in Red Bluff and was treated in good condition. Several other drivers, including Thomas Lee, 20, of Downey, and Rhonda Warmack, 24, of Chico, sustained serious or minor injuries in separate crashes near Chester and on State Route 32.

Plane kills woman and child at Oregon airport

A pilotless 1941 single engine plane lurched forward at Josephine County Airport killing a woman and a three year old. Police identified the pilot as Stanley Bruce Walker, 42, of Roseburg Oregon, who had just started the engine by hand crank.

Committee OKs Whopping Big Defense Bill

The House Appropriations Committee approved a 74.6 billion defense bill, the largest since World War II, cutting 4 billion from Nixon requests while funding further Indochina war spending. The panel backed 933.5 million for bombs and ammo and approved jets, helicopters, and hardware but rejected many other aircraft and ground vehicles.

Army cuts civilian KP duties to lure recruits

The House Appropriations Committee rejected plans to remove KP and cigarette butt-policing details, cutting 125 million dollars from a 74.6 billion defense bill to fund civilian workers. The move aims to keep young men joining the Army as defense spending faces a Thursday vote.

U.S. Studies New Peace Statement From Viet Cong

The Viet Cong issued a new three page peace statement saying it would accept a provisional government of national concord dominated by neither side. U.S. Saigon sources saw it as a possible concession that neither side can win militarily. White House aides offered cautious remarks saying they are studying the statement.
