The Associated Press reports five aircraft were shot down in a dogfight over the Golan Heights, three Syrian and two Israeli planes involved. Israel claimed all its planes returned safely and no casualties were reported.
Washington reports the Nixon administration faces criticism over the scale of U S wheat sales to the Soviet Union and bread price controls. Earl Butz prepared a news conference to discuss the sale’s impact while economist Herbert Stein noted food prices rose about 3.7 percent in the last year.
Sacramento AP Evelle Younger states that advertised gasoline price must include all taxes and that the law requires retailers to disclose the full price per gallon. Since July 1 confusion rose as some stations add tax at sale. The attorney general says the tax must be shown in the posted price.
Viet Cong sappers attacked the Da Nang area refugee camp in a night raid under heavy rain. AP photographer Dang Van Phuoc reports 20 refugees killed, 94 wounded, 200 families rendered homeless after mortars rockets and satchel charges. The attackers fled Camp Books with no losses.
The Daily News presents a 16 page TV Week and Farmers Forum supplement with a color television theme. It previews new programs and lists colorcast specials for the 1972 73 season alongside the regular Tehama County channel listings.
The Red Bluff Tehama County Chamber of Commerce and the California State Chamber of Commerce highway committees will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a no-host dinner at Crystal Tavern Red Bluff. Tehama chair Jim Froome Jr. will present highway priority recommendations with county and city officials attending. Edith Irving freed on bail in Zurich Friday night.
Gov. Reagan calls for stripping state authority and transferring powers to cities and counties to boost responsiveness. A task force will review structure in October, consider redrawing county lines, and potentially merging city and county governments to improve efficiency and economy.
The 12th annual California Beef Cattle Improvement Association Field Day near Tehama featured host Bill Borrer of Tehama Angus Ranch presenting quality cattle and stressing education as a core function. Speakers included Vincent S. Meyer, William S. Roche, Ken Ellis, and Joe L. Budd, with the Beef Performance Breeder of the Year honor awarded at a chuck wagon barbecue.
Tehama County Recreation and Parks Department mower fire caused 150 in damage at Mill Creek Park. Units from Tehama County and Corning responded to the 8 59 a m blaze. The cause cited sparks from a harvester on the C S Blackburn property. No injuries reported.
Nelson E. and Winifred Bartoo announce a Sears authorized catalog store opening in Corning next month with a grand opening on October 5 6 and 7 at 1208 Solano Street. Bartoo has 27 years with Pendleton Tool Industries in Los Angeles and the couple has lived in Los Molinos since last summer with three children and seven grandchildren.
Red Bluff Airport Commission will not meet on Monday as city and airport manager Herbert Nelson cites insufficient business. Regular 5 p.m. session canceled due to lack of items to discuss.
