In San Francisco a non profit clinic plans to charge 250 dollars for legal abortions with psychiatric and post operative care. Officials expect to lower the fee to about 210 dollars soon and perform outpatient procedures averaging four hours.
A month-long Teamsters strike idled over 70 000 construction workers in Northern California. The agreement calls for a two year contract with 60 cent wage and 20 cent benefit boosts annually and classifies independent dump truck operators as employees if approved by the NLRB. Pickets to end and work resume after the Labor Day weekend with ratification expected from union members.
The Daily News plans a holiday Monday with staff taking the day off alongside federal state and city workers and merchants. In a Phoenix eastside home seven people were shot to death including four children aged 1 to nine months and Debbie 12. A man fled, was chased to a hospital with leg wounds, and then jailed on murder charges after treatment. Neighbors linked the suspect to Mrs. Bentley’s husband’s former employer.
The body of 18 year old Eric Brandt Olson of Tacoma Wash was identified after a collision north of Red Bluff on Interstate 5. Olson died when his Volkswagen hit a parked Rambler near the northbound rest area. Three passengers remained hospitalized at St Elizabeth Hospital with one in guarded serious condition and two in satisfactory condition.
In San Francisco AP reports the California Supreme Court heard that Pacific Telephone used improper lobbying to win Public Utilities Commission approval for a 143 million rate hike the largest in state history. State Board of Equalization member William Bennett urged an independent hearing officer to probe lobbying and ensure a fair review of the June 22 increase.
Deputies credited with arresting Melvin Perry Wright Ronald Jay Crisp and Frankie Thomas Graham in connection with a Manton Store burglary. A similar breakin occurred at the Bowman Store.
Private interment was held for the stillborn infant son of Don and Patty Routh this morning. The loss was announced as a private family event with no public services planned.
CHICAGO AP House Agriculture Committee Chairman W R Poage urged a government wage support plan linking farm wages to parity levels. He noted current payments raise farmers to about 74 percent of parity and proposed the government cover the gap to full parity, varying with price support.
Motorists head to highways for the Labor Day weekend as 67 deaths occur so far. The National Safety Council projects 600 to 700 more deaths before midnight Monday, with 612 last year and 638 during the July Fourth weekend. The era’s third three day weekend follows peak highs of 688 in 1968 and a low of 386 in 1961.

Tehama County deputies charged Lorraine Cecilia Radcliffe 50 Rio Linda with driving while intoxicated. She was arrested a quarter mile north of the Mill Creek Bridge on Highway 99 at midnight. An earlier Antelope Boulevard Williams Avenue crash involved Robert Whiteside 35 Saugus driving a 1989 International into Antelope from Williams, colliding with Clifford Busekist 25 255 Kay Ave in a 1969 Dodge. no injuries.
