Senator Edward Gurney called for a new independent special prosecutor free from administration control as hearings on the Watergate probe intensify. Cox urged Congress to establish an independent prosecutor by statute while debates over appointment and firing rights continue.
Israeli forces allowed a mercy convoy of food water and medical supplies to reach the 20 000 man Egyptian 3rd Army trapped east of the Suez Canal but UN peacekeepers moved to create a buffer zone amid questions of a future pullback. UNEF officers described the mission as moving between the lines as cease fire terms were discussed.
Washington officials said Israel, Egypt and Syria remain heavily armed as U.S. and Soviet arms continue to flow to the Middle East. Despite losses, both sides are expected to be rearmed fully, heightening urgency for a lasting peace and the risk of another conflict if a settlement is not reached.
A U S official said talks from New York to Cairo on Middle East peace are premature but possible. He warned the road to real peace is long and difficult and stated U S pressure on Israel to lift its encirclement of the Egyptian 3rd Army faces resistance, with surrender risking Sadat's regime.
In Moscow a Soviet leader urged a meeting with Henry Kissinger to shape a Middle East truce plan that won UN approval. The figure heads the Soviet Communist Party and appears in THE QUIZ on Page 11 for Tehama County students.
John Connally urged Nixon to release the White House tapes sooner and provide a detailed public explanation for firing Archibald Cox. He warned the delay worsened confusion and chaos in the nation. The remarks came during a Capital Eye interview in Austin.
The Soviet Union and United States pledged to pursue reductions in central Europe. Negotiators warned a quick agreement was unlikely as talks on NATO and Warsaw Pact force cuts began in Vienna. The Warsaw Pact seeks larger cuts, while NATO and the US insist on balanced reductions. NATO ground forces are 777,000 to the Warsaw Pact's 871,000, per the Institute of Strategic Studies.
Tehama County reports its fifth traffic fatality this month in a one car crash on Paskenta Road. Larry Akins 25 driver of a pickup died after fishtailing into a tree near Corrigan Road. Two passengers were hospitalized with injuries.
