U S air cavalrymen maul a North Vietnamese battalion near the Cambodian border while American infantry decimate a Viet Cong force in the Mekong Delta. Sixty plus enemy casualties reported this week with seven U S fatalities and sixteen wounded.
Acting president Dr. Hayakawa was set to rescind his first edict and command San Francisco State College to reopen Monday amid campus strife. Deputy president Dr. DeVere Pentony resigned, remaining as dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences, to allow Hayakawa to form his own staff.
In Mannington West Virginia Consol Coal confirms Mountaineer No 9 mine sealed after November 20 explosion and subsequent blasts. 78 miners died in the worst disaster since 1951 as access to the area was restricted and the company announced completion of sealing early this morning.
Joseph St. Clair Botkin 67 of Richmond died after an extended illness. A native of Paskenta he moved to Richmond five months ago and was a retired taxicab driver. He belonged to Teamsters Local 165 the Richmond American Legion post 10 and a WWII veteran. Survived by three sisters and two brothers and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Tuesday 1 30 p m at Paskenta Community Church Rev Michael Cappello officiating burial in Paskenta Cemetery. Wilson Kratzer Mortuary Richmond handling arrangements.
Hong Kong flu has been diagnosed in ten California counties with 16 confirmed cases. Officials note earlier reports of 300 to 500 illnesses in the Needles area last November and list Sierra Stanislaus Contra Costa San Mateo Santa Clara Santa Cruz Kern Los Angeles San Bernardino and San Diego among affected counties.
Dr. C. M. Wagner will attend a medical meeting out of town, shifting the Tehama County immunization clinic from the regular date to Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 23. The Monday session runs 7 to 8 p.m. and the Tuesday 1 to 2 p.m. at the Tehama County Health Department behind Tehama General Hospital.
Victor M. Hungerford, ex Red Bluff resident and Korean War veteran, won $40,000 in U.S. District Court in San Francisco after a $500,000 malpractice suit against the Army. He alleged failure to diagnose a head injury led to a court martial and a prison sentence on a bad check charge. Attorney John Harper said Hungerford was ill and unemployed and unaware of the ruling.
U S and North Vietnam exchange accusations about alleged violations of the bombing halt as peace talks loom. Hanoi cites three days of U S attacks north of the 17th parallel on Nov. 27, while U S officials describe earlier actions as suppressive fire and verify reconnaissance flights continue.
The nation experienced mostly clear and dry weather as November ends. Snow flurries touched the Great Lakes and New England, while light rain dampened parts of the Pacific Northwest and Gulf Coast. Temperatures were seasonally crisp except in Florida and parts of the Southwest.
