A CH47 Chinook helicopter crashed in a flooded Mekong Delta rice field southwest of Saigon killing all 22 Americans aboard. Nine bodies were recovered by dusk and field officers suspected the craft was shot down.
Mostly cloudy today with intermittent light rain and a 40 percent chance of precipitation. Partly cloudy Thursday as temperatures rise to 68 today and 67 tomorrow with light variable winds. Outlook Friday to Sunday remains partly cloudy with a 20 to 50 percent rain chance and warmer highs. River levels and sun data included.
The Tehama County board to investigate the transfer of sanitarian John Scott after a double barreled motion by Supervisor Shannon Patterson. Dr. Lloyd Bond denied political pressure stating the decision was a personnel matter and not to be discussed publicly.
Red Bluff Mayor Eugene Penne will dedicate the Main Street Beautification Project at 7 p.m. at Pine and Main. The ceremony, featuring Elmer Zuckweiler as master of ceremonies and the Red Bluff High Spartan Band, will honor merchants, property owners, and city officials who financed and planned improvements including benches, pots, tree lighting, and underground wiring.
The Tehama County Supervisors urge state lawmakers to allow counties to revert long standing map subdivisions to acreage. Sam l Posen, recorded in 1887 as a promotional gimmick, never developed and deeds were given to theatergoers. Also, Larry Coleman won a bid for an electronic distance meter on a three year lease to aid remapping and monumenting county land.
South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu calls for independent negotiations with North Vietnam to sign a cease fire and political settlement. He rejects a coalition government and omits U S involvement. Paris talks and Kissinger mediation are noted but unsigned.
Michael Lynn O Neal of Red Bluff pled guilty to two counts of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury in Tehama County Superior Court. Judge Elvin F Sheehy ordered a pre sentencing probation report. The case shows additional dispositions for Walter Schmidt and John Sanders with separate pleas and referrals. Bill Farish pled innocent to burglary with jury trial set for Nov 29.
A Washington man, Ronald Norwood Fuller of Edmonds, 22, escaped injury when his car rolled over on Interstate 5 just north of the Hooker Creek overcrossing during a 12:30 a.m. incident. Police report he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and the vehicle was totally damaged.
Halloween 1972 left Red Bluff with egg shells and vomit on the streets and windows while gangs roamed town until about 11 p.m. Reports noted egging water ballooning and pickups packed with youths. In Santa Rosa a theft and a late night robbery left one man dead. officials reported various candy tampering concerns but no widespread injuries.
