Fire season opens with firefighters already tackling grass fires along rural areas. Crews report active blazes near fields and highways, urging residents to clear debris and avoid outdoor sparks while monitoring wind shifts. Local officials say readiness remains high as drought and heat persist.
The California Division of Forestry reports multiple fires since Saturday as warm weather begins the 1975 wildland fire season. The most serious blaze hit Maywood Trailer Park in Corning causing about $18 000 in trailer damage and $2 000 in contents. Several grass and brush fires followed near Seven Mile Creek Alder Springs Road Battle Creek and Red Bluff with losses ranging up to five acres. Firefighting involved Tehama County rural engines Corning Volunteers U S Forest Service and mutual assists. Ranger Howard Bromwell announced Tehama Glens unit fire season opening and noted fuel conditions and increased brush growth.
Tehama County boards and CSAC condemn a state Department of Health map change that cuts Tehama into a 17 percent county area and shifts Trinity County. They allege improper process and insufficient public input while noting the plan expands areas to 1.5 million people and could affect hospital bed licensing and grants. The board plans to mail formal opposition letters.
Fred Will Jr. a 58 year old Red Bluff resident and county road department operator, died at the scene after falling from a moving bulldozer during a gravel screening operation near Thames Creek west of Highway 96W. Road Commissioner Larry Coleman said Will climbed on the tracks to talk to the operator and was fatally injured. it is reportedly the department’s first fatal accident.
A bus plunged 25 feet after brakes failed killing 32 people including 31 women. Driver Paul Marriott reportedly warned Elsie Fown Townsend that gears were sticky and brakes failed before dying.
President Ford departed on a six day four nation European mission to bolster NATO and ally cooperation. He planned meetings with leaders in Brussels Spain Austria and Italy and anticipated talks with Egyptian Austria to push toward a just peace in the Middle East. Susan Ford accompanied her parents at Andrews for the departure.
