Apollo 10 astronauts Air Force Col. Thomas P. Stafford and Navy Cmdrs. John W. Young and Eugene A. Cerna n land safely in the South Pacific near the recovery ship Princeton at 12:52 p.m. EDT after a high risk mission. They report the ship in good shape and express optimism about future manned spaceflight.
U S command announces two new offensives in South Vietnam aimed at destroying enemy forces, with 142 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed in the drives. Operation Samar Plain began May 16 near Da Nang to relieve Tam Ky.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird defended U S battlefield tactics amid Democratic criticism, saying aims are to apply maximum pressure with the lowest possible casualties as GIs faced the Dong Ap Bia Mountain battle that cost about 50 American lives. He spoke before a NATO planning trip to Brussels and London, with Senators Kennedy Mansfield and McGovern criticizing the strategy as reckless.
Washington reports the Nixon administration has secured commitments for Senate approval of the Safeguard antimissile system. Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen expressed confidence that the votes will be there when the issue reaches the Senate next month.
Three people were hurt with minor injuries in four weekend accidents per the California Highway Patrol. Los Molinos Memorial Hall hosts a recreation meeting at 7 30 p.m. featuring reports by 20 Chico State students. They compiled a study on local recreation from an 180 page document, noting sport clinics and a kite contest.
Red Bluff police investigate a theft of clothing items wigs and household goods reported by Deidre Botenhagen of 1344 Jackson St. The incident occurred in the afternoon with no valuation provided.
Red Bluff featured three varied stage events this weekend as Cowtown, USA's image took a temporary break. The American Association of University Women presented Stitches and Sketches at Red Bluff Union High School Gym with a fashion show and various acts. The Red Bluff School of Dance staged The Wedding of the Fly and Bumble Bee, while Mercy High School capped the weekend with a repeat Mikado performance drawing large, enthusiastic crowds.
Linda Terrell credits Red Bluff officer Dave Ross with saving her five year old son after he fell face down in Whiskeytown Lake. Ross jumped in, revived the unconscious boy, ensured ambulance redundancy, and transported him to a Redding hospital where he recovered fully.
Northern California's fire season has begun says State Forester Francis H. Raymond. He notes above normal rainfall created abundant flammable growth and warns the season could be hazardous. Fire stations lookouts and crews are being activated in Glenn and Tehama Counties with 150 personnel at peak. most fires are man caused.
The 1969 fire season opened in Red Bluff with Fire Chief Tom Gauthier warning that no open burning is allowed without special permission from the fire department. Closed incinerator burning remains permissible.
