Bribery and Compassion Mark Escape From Saigon

The last American to leave Saigon, A. Roy Brown of Ontario, recalls the final days in 1975. Rescue of Mayaguez Crew Ends With Marine Casualties

U S helicopters evacuated a Marine force from Koh Tang after dark to rescue the Mayaguez and its 45 crew from Cambodian captors. At least one Marine dead and many wounded in a 14 hour firefight with Cambodian and Communist forces as helicopters, damaged earlier, completed the night's risky extraction to the carrier Coral Sea.

Victory celebration marks South Vietnam's fall and city renamed

In Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese leaders opened a three day victory celebration with a joint television appearance. Tho and Thang praised regional solidarity and urged peace and unification while condemning past U.S. intervention.

House Sets Aid Ceiling for Vietnamese Refugee Program

The House quickly set a 507 million ceiling for refugee resettlement aid and then approved 405 million in appropriations for the program. The measures were sent to the Senate for swift action with broad votes. An open ended authorization was rejected in favor of a fixed limit, and an amendment barred using funds for North Vietnam or the Viet Cong.

Seventeen Prisoners Escape Chicago Prison During Surprise Check

Seventeen inmates escaped from a Chicago prison by tunneling through a wall into the laundry area and slipping through a small hole after guards left to quell another disturbance. Police recaptured six by early morning, while helicopters, dogs, and armed officers hunted the others, including four murder defendants. The escape occurred in a facility housing about 3,000 inmates.

County Completes Jefferson Street Impact Report

The environmental impact report on vacating a block of Jefferson Street is finished with 40 copies sent to Red Bluff. A June 3 public hearing on closing the Oak to Pine Street section is set by the city council, and the planning commission will review the report on June 18. The board aims to free space for county offices and ensure off street parking, with church trustees signaling no objections.

Fatal Bus Wreck Attributed to Speed Near Ashland Oregon

California investigators say excessive speed caused a Mt. Shasta school bus to overturn after rear ending a car on a steep downgrade along Interstate 5 near Ashland. Driver Nora Coville, 40, and two female students on a field trip were killed.
