Corning Council Reviews City Budget and Wages

Corning officials discussed the proposed fiscal year budget totaling 330 483 dollars with a five percent raise for city employees. Major revenue sources include water sales 72000 dollars sales tax 65000 dollars and taxes 49960 dollars. The public works budget and police fire departments were outlined with May 26 meeting planned to discuss 40 hour work option and standby staffing.

Old Red Bluff Warehouses Burn In Spectacular Fire

Two large warehouses on Monroe Street in Red Bluff were destroyed by a blaze in the early hours. Owner Herman Dolling and A L Isensee valued the property at 25 000 dollars. Lyon and Garrett Hardware Co stored appliances and pickup trucks in the south building. Firefighters from Red Bluff and the California Division of Forestry fought the flames, with about 24 city personnel and four forestry staff on site. The cause was under investigation with a theory of a transient cooking a meal prior to leaving.

Nixon seeks random draft lottery and shorter first-call age

President Nixon asked Congress to authorize a random draft lottery with 19 year olds first called but only for one year. He urged limiting disruption while pursuing a goal of an all volunteer force in peaceful times, and proposed a youngest-first draft order. A six point plan would lessen exposure as age rises.

Auto Wreck Victim Holding Own At Sacramento Hospital

Jack Covert a 42 year old Chico man severely injured in a two car crash south of Los Molinos Sunday is reported holding his own today at Sutter Hospital Sacramento. He was transferred after Chico hospital examination and underwent neurosurgery for head injuries and remains on the critical list. His wife Barbara 40 and sons Gary 16 Tim 15 were treated at Chico Community Hospital and released. Prior to moving seven years ago the Coverts lived in Red Bluff.

Red Bluff School Board to discuss Family Life Education agenda

The Red Bluff Union High School board meets tonight at 8 p.m. at the district office on Douglas Street. The agenda includes student teaching contracts certificates of election and a report on Family Life Education Reports of the superintendent and an audience with individuals or groups are scheduled. The AP reports Attorney General John N. Mitchell reportedly told Chief Justice Earl Warren that more public disclosure about the Fortas Wolfson fee incident could strain White House and Supreme Court relations.

Lassen View Teacher To Attend Institute

Joe Cordova, a ten year Lassen View School District teacher, was selected for a year long University of New Mexico bilingual education program. He will begin with an eight week summer session in Guadalajara, Mexico, studying language and anthropology and visiting minority schools.
