Pathet Lao Move to Seize Laos Loyalist Forces

In Vientiane the Pathet Lao moved to take control of the loyalist military as Prime Minister Souvanna Phouma sought to calm panic on radio. Foreign nationals fled Laos disrupting the economy while the State Department said no evacuation of about 1000 Americans planned. The new defense minister Kham Ouane Boupha ordered no troop or equipment movements without ministry orders.

Five killed as Lockheed Constellation crashes near Mesa home

A Lockheed Super Constellation, carrying six aboard, crashed near a Mesa children's home after its left inboard engine caught fire on takeoff from Falcon Field. All on board died. the crash occurred minutes after fueling for a flight to Canada via Kansas City.

Mayaguez seized by Cambodian vessel in high seas

The Cambodian naval vessel fired on and seized the American merchant ship Mayaguez with 39 crew counted by the White House 40 per Sea-Land official. Ford called it piracy and set NSC plans while seeking immediate release and warning of serious consequences.

Bicycle and motorcycle fatalities rise despite overall transport deaths drop

Federal safety data show total transportation deaths fell 18 percent in 1974 to 50 541, the largest drop since WWII, while bicycle deaths rose 20 percent and motorcycle deaths 12.4 percent. Highways accounted for 44 950 of all deaths as NTSB cautions a possible upward trend.

Routine Traffic Stop Ends In Man Arrest In Pot Smuggling Case

A routine stop near Richfield led to the arrest of Red Bluff resident Donald Juan Johnson 33 on a federal warrant for illegal transportation of marijuana. Deputy Larry Pritchard stopped him on River Road as agents recovered 210 pounds of marijuana and $4,000 in El Paso, Texas. Johnson faces immediate transport to federal custody.

Mansfield presses hearings on Vietnam refugee aid

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield urged thorough hearings before approving more refugee funding. He cited funding delays and slow resettlement, called for detailed scrutiny of administration plans, and noted a House move to allocate 406 million of 507 million requested.

Red Bluff Stabbing Leads to Gerber Arrests

A Red Bluff man was stabbed 17 times during a neighbor dispute in Gerber. Lloyd Buckley, 28, was treated in good condition at St Elizabeth Hospital. Monte Wilson Jr., 25, was arrested on assault with intent to murder and assault and battery charges. Wilson's wife Mary was also jailed on related accusations. Deputy Jim Gillespie injured. case to go to district attorney.
