Tehama County Opportunity Center sought a $10 238 state grant to cover operating costs through July 1 with a written promise to cede long term control to the welfare department The county supervisors balked at the demand while welfare officials claimed a future exit clause The dispute hints at a forthcoming federal program mandating rehabilitation services for all welfare recipients in the county

No Action Is Action On Tehama General Hospital Question

Tehama County supervisors indefinitely postponed any further action on Tehama General Hospital after approving emergency room cuts. As of March 28 only Short-Doyle Mental Health patients and certain emergencies may use the ER, while doctors consider the ER 90 percent of their problem. Local doctors have boycotted the hospital for over a year.

Eisenhower in critical condition at Walter Reed

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 78, remains in critical condition at Walter Reed General Hospital after severe congestive heart failure. Doctors report no deterioration in the last 24 hours, but his prognosis remains uncertain.

Viet Cong Hit Dong Tam Base South of Saigon

Viet Cong mortars struck the Dong Tam base of the 9th Infantry Division near Saigon, wrecking buildings and destroying three helicopters. American casualties totaled a few killed and over 60 wounded as the attack marked the 32nd night of the spring offensive. Col. Ira Hunt estimated up to 500 tons of ammunition exploded in the assault.

Nixon Urges Extending Surtax and Major Spending Cuts

President Nixon asked Congress to extend the 10 percent income tax surcharge for 12 months and to enact significant federal spending reductions. He noted Johnson era surpluses eroded by inflation and optimistic estimates and signaled budget revisions for the year starting July 1 with substantial cuts. Senate GOP leader Mike Mansfield pressed for a second large cut as a condition for extending the surcharge.
