The Tehama County Sheepmen's Field Day occurs Saturday at the Earl and Jim Davies Ranch in Flournoy, 13 miles west of Corning. Activities include sheep nutrition talks, lamb barbecue, sheep dog trials, and demonstrations on shearing and wool spinning, with reports on lamb and wool markets. Tickets cost 3.50 for adults and 1.50 for children.
In a high profile bank robbery trial, Patricia Hearst’s testimony closed after 37 court days. The jury of seven women and five men will rehear closing arguments Friday to decide if she willingly aided the Hibernia Bank robbery on April 15, 1974 or acted under duress. Her mother Catherine Hearst testified of a loving, strong willed daughter, challenging prosecution claims and suggesting motivations behind police psychiatric testimony.
The County Hospital and Safety Commission voted to stay out of the voter decision on Tehama General Hospital’s acute care services. Chair Mary Koball presented statistics she said contradicted ballot arguments to discontinue services, while commissioners debated accounting methods and the hospital’s financial losses.
Sen Frank Church of Idaho announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. He said he aims to end U S leadership of weakness and fear and spoke in Idaho City. Hubert Humphrey urged by Chicago Sun Times to enter primaries.
President Ford will name Rogers C B Morton as campaign manager succeeding Howard Callaway who resigned amid controversy. Morton has been Ford’s chief political adviser since February and signaled willingness to take on the role as the campaign begins.
In the June 7 primary Tehama County residents will vote on eliminating acute inpatient care at Tehama General Hospital while keeping the facility open for health care as needed. County Clerk Floyd Hicks selected three yes arguments by Ralph Leach Lucile F McCready Verna Evelyn Robinson Joe Amps and Gary Dutro and one no argument by Ernest White A V Hornbeck Betty J Slionys Jack J Milligan and Walter W Dale. The two official arguments and the district attorney's analysis will appear on the ballot.
Voters urged to reject the ballot hospital proposal and keep Tehama General as a publicly owned acute care facility. Supporters say the hospital meets accreditation, serves indigent and elderly county residents, and that privatization could double costs and limit access.
Citizens urged a yes vote citing cost savings from CPA audits and Grand Jury reviews. They argue other facilities can care for county patients and that continuing acute care at Tehama General is inefficient, aging, and financially burdened, with staff shortages and legal service constraints.
