Americans packed Dublin parades while Chicago dyed the river green. At Grogan's in South Boston corn beef and cabbage drew crowds as New York prepared its 207th St Patrick's Day show with 27 000 marchers across 161 bands.
In Sacramento, Democratic Assemblyman Alan Sieroty of Beverly Hills proposed a bill to further ease penalties for mere possession or presence where marijuana is used. The measure comes as the 1969 legislative session enters its 11th week after a long weekend, following last year’s action granting judges authority to determine penalties for cannabis convictions.
Everett Doman of the U S Forest Service will speak at the second deer seminar in Red Bluff High School Cafeteria at 8 p m The session is open to the public and invites Sportsmen stockmen hunters ranchers conservationists and students to attend.
The State Board of Equalization says hospitals churches and similar institutions escape property taxes totaling about 1 billion dollars. It urges the legislature to tighten exemption rules and remove homes for the aged that house wealthy residents from tax exemption.
Gene E. Bigler II admissions counselor from the University of the Pacific in Stockton will meet students in Red Bluff High School from 1 15 to 2 45 p m. He is a Raymond College alumnus and spent last year in Quito Ecuador on a Fulbright grant.
Red Bluff hosts the ninth annual Student Art Show at Riverside Shopping Plaza through Wednesday. Coordinator Robert Ellis notes the exhibit features 300 items from kindergarten to twelfth grade in media such as paintings ceramics prints mobiles and sculpture. Hours 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for convenient viewing.
Paul Soncrant of the Red Bluff Roundup Association announced that 30 trailers from the Silverado Trailer Club in Napa will stay four days at his Dibble Creek ranch for the 47th annual Roundup event.
Venezuelan DC9 jetliner bound for Miami crashes into a residential area near Maracaibo killing 74 passengers and 10 crew plus an estimated 71 on the ground. The blaze follows an altitude loss to about 150 feet after takeoff from Grano de Oro airport. The cause remains under study with the flight recorder recovered.
Tehama County teens were cited for possession of beer wine and champagne while drinking in a vehicle on Dale Road near Corning. The group included 19-year-old Nicholas Joseph Prather and four Corning youths ages 16 and 17. The Red Bluff trio ages 15 and 16 were cited on North Main Street. All but Prather must appear at Tehama County Juvenile Court in Red Bluff. Prather was cited to Corning Justice Court.
The Antelope School will name its new Edyth Carpenter Library honoring a Red Bluff native and longtime teacher who died March 5. The library will include an Indian Museum section and house Mrs Carpenter’s artifact collection and county history writings. Memorial donations are invited via Marguerite Godbolt at the school and the dedication occurs during Public Schools Week in late April.
Israeli war planes struck suspected Arab guerrilla bases southeast of the Sea of Galilee for a second straight day. An army spokesman said the raids involved four to five planes targeting gun positions that fired missiles at settlements, triggering an artillery duel with casualties reported as none beyond damaged farmland.
U S Thai and South Vietnamese troops report 281 enemy killed in heavy fighting around Saigon and the Mekong Delta, with 40 graves containing 152 more bodies found south of Da Nang. U S infantrymen say 131 Viet Cong were slain in five Mekong Delta clashes over the weekend. Thailand's Black Panther Division repulsed an attack near Saigon, claiming 109 Viet Cong killed.
Northern California greeted St Patrick day with fog and mist as a storm front moved into Fresno by midmorning. Snow fell above 4 000 feet in the Sierra and Mt Shasta area. Rainfall through Sunday night reached up to a quarter inch at Point Arena Ukiah and Red Bluff with measurable amounts as far south as Merced.
The Corning Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Easter Egg Hunt at Tehama County River Park near Woodson Bridge. The event starts Saturday April 5 at 2 p.m. and features 3600 colored eggs hidden on the park's north side.
