Red Bluff city council approved updated uniform codes covering building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, housing, dangerous buildings, signs and fire prevention. They also advanced annexation near Gilmore andKimble Roads, set bids for the Antelope water main, and recognized Girl Scout Week.
Olaf Johnson of Tehama County denies a published report that he called a coyote study an utter failure and disputes claims he spoke of astronomical deer losses or a Stanford University research link. He confirms saying friends saw more deer killed but says the project is not a failure and progress is slow yet ongoing.
Apollo 9 astronauts McDivitt and Schweickart fire the lunar module descent engine for the first Americans to transfer from the command ship to the lunar vehicle. The six minute burn tests steering and readiness for the July moon landing as Col. Scott watches from the command module. Schweickart battles nausea but completes the transfer and spacewalk plans remain on schedule.
A daylight assassination attempt on South Vietnam Premier Tran Van Huong failed as alert guards engaged attackers near the U S Embassy in Saigon. The clash followed a broader offensive with shelling of about 30 towns and allied bases outside the capital.
Gustav Heinemann a 69 year old justice minister was elected West Germany's president by six votes in Berlin. Heinemann won 512 votes on the third ballot while Gerhard Schroeder received 506 with six votes withheld amid East German pressure and roadblock tactics.
Tehama County officials ask for 3,190,860 in federal aid to repair damaged dikes levees and drainage facilities. The request, presented to the board of supervisors with the county flood control district, covers 21 items including riprap along the Sacramento River and erosion threats near Thames Creek and Red Bluff.
Tehama County seniors conducted a mock board session led by Bob Lange with Gretchen Anderson Diana James Steve Mendenhall and Bob Perkiss. They approved a measure urging state highway officials to name a new bridge on Route 36 West for Mayor John R. Trainor who died in a Los Angeles helicopter crash.
Diseases and parasites affecting Northern California sheep flocks will be pinpointed at a special meeting for sheep men tonight at 8 pm in the basement of the Red Bluff Post Office. Ken Ellis, Tehama County Livestock farm advisor, says the program will focus on health and disease problems facing area sheepmen in the coming months. A panel of veterinarians will speak and answer questions from attendees.
Red Bluff groups sponsor a 11 30 am to 2 pm luncheon at the Elks Lodge with a 1 25 admission to aid Tehama Heart Fund. Proceeds go to the chart fund, while other events include heartacopter rides and a pool tournament at John's Place.
D Leon Williams resigns as chairman of the county flood control board effective March 12 due to insufficient time for flood damage work. He urges appointing Earl Davies, a former supervisor, to take the post and offers further service.
