California brush and timber fires race across thousands of acres
Firefighters battled six or more blazes from Mendocino to Los Angeles as a 1,200 acre Perris fire threatened farm buildings and mobile homes. One firefighter died in Kern County while other fires destroyed homes and damaged timber in several counties along the coast and inland.

Aboard the USS Ticonderoga the Skylab crew, Pete Conrad Paul Weitz and Joe Kerwin, faced differing postflight effects.
