Eagleton Plans Move To Stay On Ticket Amid Pressure

Democratic vice presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton says he will take his fight to remain on the ticket to George McGovern tonight. A meeting with McGovern is possible but no decision is guaranteed, as party leaders urge him to withdraw after disclosure of past psychiatric treatment.

B52 Down Over Thailand and Phantoms Lost in Vietnam War

A U S B52 crashed in a thunderstorm in northeast Thailand during a bombing mission to Vietnam, five crewmen killed and one rescued. Two U S Phantoms ran out of fuel off North Vietnam with four crew rescued. Hanoi claimed downed Phantoms and captures. U S denied deliberate dike bombing while noting minor damage from stray bombs.

World's Longest Horse Race Won By Reno Housewife

Reno housewife Donna Fitzgerald won the 100 Mile One Day Trail Ride in 12 hours 42 minutes. The event began Saturday 5 a.m. at Squaw Valley and ended Sunday at the Auburn Fairgrounds with 93 finishers from 171 starters. Hal Hall of Auburn finished second nine minutes back, while Eva Taylor of Port Townsend rode Hugo to 20th place in the 18th running of the race. The Western States Trail Ride Association sponsors the event with rest stops and veterinarian checks across entrants from 13 states.

Socialite Virginia Piper Describes Tree Chain Escape

Virginia Piper, abducted socialite, explained she was chained to a forest tree with a three foot allowance and dug with her bare hands to free herself. FBI agents then freed her hands and, with four agents, toppled the tree to release the chain. Her husband, Harry C. Piper, paid a one million dollar ransom in twenties.

Belgian statesman Spaak dies at 73 in Brussels

Paul Henri Spaak a Belgian Socialist leader and key architect of European unity and NATO died in Brussels at 73 from a kidney deficiency. Known as Mr Europe he helped found the United Nations and the European Common Market and served as Belgium premier and foreign minister across four decades.

Five Injured In Two Minor County Crashes

California Highway Patrol reports two minor crashes near Red Bluff over the weekend. Chris Andrew Anderson 41 of Red Bluff was treated for minor injuries after a single car wreck at Live Oak and Red Sank Roads. He failed to negotiate a curve and hit a power pole. Michael Timothy Gutierrez 19 of Los Gatos drifted off the road and hit an embankment while checking a map four miles east of Stice Road. Rachelle Mitz 19 of San Jose David Peterson 21 of Campbell and Michelle Brown 19 of San Jose also received treatment at St Elizabeth Hospital and were released.

Collision Fatally Injures Three Local Residents

Three Red Bluff residents, Robert Max Moore 26 Debra Thurman 22 and her infant son William 17 months were killed when a pickup camper was struck by an Amtrak train at a crossing in Oceanside. The collision threw occupants 100 to 170 feet. crossing signals were active. No train injuries reported. Also noted an Alaska quake causing no serious damage or injuries.

H Richard Maguire longtime Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce secretary manager resigns Aug 31 to become general manager of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce. His wife Ruth will relocate mid August. He cites growth and past achievements including the Fourth of July Regatta Air Round-Up and Christmas lights as high points during his nine years.
