Skylab's second crew Alan Bean Own Garriott and Jack Lousma launched on a Saturn 1B rocket from Cape Kennedy into a 92 mile initial orbit for a two month mission to the space station. The crew reported a flawless start and prepared for rendezvous with Skylab about 270 miles high.

Chico Girl Killed In Early Morning County Accident
A 17 year old Chico girl died when her sedan was struck head on by a pickup on Highway 99E near Tehama County. Cathy Williams of Chico died at the scene. The pickup driver Allen Franklin Loyd of Paradise was treated and released with minor injuries at Corning Memorial Hospital. A separate single car crash on River Lake Drive near Bowman Road killed a man. CHP did not release further details.
